How do I wash our National Flag Properly?

It’s never too late to wash our Nations flag. In fact, it’s not a bad idea to clean and then store our flag properly after you fly the flag tomorrow in observance of Independence holiday. First, and as most would agree, it is important to understand the U.S. Flag code. The U.S. Flag code contains just about everything you need to know about how to handle our flag with respect and dignity. However, the code does not make mention of how to wash or launder our flag. So, aside from all associated U.S. Flag handling and etiquette, I’m including a link to the U.S. Flag Code.

Now, for the proper cleaning instructions!
The best way to clean Ole Glory, quite simply, is hand wash in cold water with a little TLC. Never let it touch the ground, handle it like an infant. Use your best judgment in getting the excess water out after a hand rinse. It’s important to get all the soap out so as to not store it with any foreign material or residue. I lay my flag down on a dry white towel indoors until dry, this usually takes less than 12 hours in an air-conditioned climate.

That’s it, that’s all there is to  it. The most important part of this process is to familiarize yourself with the U.S. Flag code so as to honor our Nations flag, you’ll see after the cleaning and as you raise the flag on any occasion – you handled the flag with the care and respect our flag deserves!

Happy Independence Day, enjoy, and stay safe!
